Every year at TEA the members of student council put in maximum effort to organize a memorable event. One of these events is our famous fund raising walkathon. Every year it is a success, as we raise a reasonable amount of money to aid charitable organizations. However, this year it was an even bigger success as we managed to raise KD1,149 money to be given to the Senyar diving team.

The Senyar Diving team was introduced to us by our student council member, Bader Al Ali. He suggested to donate the money to Senyar in order to help them with their goals towards protecting the environment. The Senyar Diving team preserves Kuwait’s marine life by keeping the coastal areas and sea clean. They also protect and aid marine creatures.

You might ask yourselves how we raised this amount of money. During the walkathon our students bought in an amount of money and divided it with the number of laps they needed to complete the walkathon. They paid a fixed amount of money per lap. Of course, due to the students’ generosity and appreciated contribution, we managed to collect enough money.

During our morning line up, after we had collected all of the money, Mr Vernall presented the Senyar Dive Team with a giant cheque on behalf of every student and teacher that participated.

We thank the Senyar Diving team for their continuous care towards Kuwait’s marine life.

To find out more about the Senyar Dive Team you can visit their website www.senyar.net

Paris….the city of lights, history, adventure and love. For the forty students who chose to go on The English Academy school trip, it was an unforgettable experience.

From the Eifel Tower to Disneyland and then all the way to the Normandy countryside, France was remarkably breathtaking. It was breathtaking to the extent where there was no more memory left on our cameras!!

We really enjoyed the out door activities in Normandy, from rock climbing, abseiling, rifle shooting, a fun dip in the mud on the assault course and many more activities that are far to vast to mention on a single page!

On our last night in Normandy, France, we all had a blast singing campfire songs while smelling the sweetness of sugary marshmallows being roasted on the fire.

After a week of wonderful experiences we said “Au revoir” to France, even though we were still hungry for another slice of it.

As part of TEA’s expansion in music a range of individual instrumental lessons are being offered by specialist musicians. At present about 20 pupils ranging from years 1 to 9 are receiving lessons. Mrs Short is teaching violin and Mrs Johnson piano (supplemented also by the department’s Miss Kate). Plans are well underway to include guitar, drums, flute, clarinet and brass instruments in the scheme. This will enable in the future to run groups such as orchestra and bands.

The benefits of learning a musical instrument have been well documented for improving skills such as hand/eye co-ordination and concentration which in turn improves skills in other subject areas. But most importantly students get to experience the sheer enjoyment of producing their own music.

All those currently on the scheme are showing great improvement and there will be performance opportunities for all. In many cases instruments can be provided although pupils are encouraged to purchase their own as they develop. We have invested a considerable amount in the music department.

The pupils did amazingly well – we were the smallest contingent at the KESMUN event but by no means did they go unnoticed! For some, this was their second MUN experience but we had several who had only recently joined the group and were feeling somewhat apprehensive about the forthcoming event.

The policy debates started promptly at 5pm on Thursday evening and every one of our pupils took part in the debates in one way or another – whether it was to raise issues by making an opening debate and putting forward a resolution – or to ask thought provoking questions to other delegates.

By 9pm on Thursday they were all buzzing from the excitement! The Friday was a 13 hour stretch of lobbying and debating – another chance for them to show their skills at arguing and questioning. Yet again, an excellent display of their command of the specific language required by both the UN and MUN. A number of teachers visited the event on the Friday and all have commented on how surprised they were at the sophisticated level of debate and discussion by all the pupils involved.

After a hard morning of debating and amending resolutions put forward on Saturday, all the delegates were shipped off to the Holiday Inn, Downtown where they were ushered up into one of the banquet halls for the ambassadors’ luncheon and closing ceremony.

The closing ceremony was introduced by the Secretary General of KESMUN and followed by interesting speeches by the Ambassadors of Australia andPakistan, both of whom opened the floor to questions from the student delegates. Following this the Chairs of all commissions awarded delegates for ‘most improved’, ‘best effort’ and ‘best delegate’. From TEA Karol Kusmider was nominated ‘Best Delegate’ for the Human Rights Commission .

All the pupils put outstanding amounts of effort into their commissions, each of them having spent a considerable amount of time researching their country (France) and helping each other to present a united front.

Rana Mohammed, who was attending her second MUN, made a leap from ‘quiet attendee’ at her first experience to being that of a forthright and argumentative delegate in the Territorial Disputes Commission questioning her peers directly.

Absolutely every one of our pupils was a credit to the school and I was proud to be their Director. They displayed strong speaking and listening skills in an environment where the language demanded is specific and required to be strictly adhered to. This is an excellent opportunity for them to take themselves out of their comfort zone and test their strengths linguistically, politically and socially.

Well done to the MUN team at TEA!

Ms Elvin
